e-consult's introduction to web security

The number of threats to Web and E-business security are so great that it is surprising that so many organisations have undertaken to develop e-business at all. The point is that although there are many threats out there, most of them may be mitigated and those that are reported are so sensationalised that you can only consider them extremely serious, even when they are not particularly newsworthy. A prime example of this was the recent attack on Microsoft’s web based e-mail service, HOTMAIL. The actual security hole was fixed very easily (and relatively quickly). When you consider that Microsoft and HOTMAIL are a prime site for attack (for this you need to understand the mentality of a typical attacker (the bigger the better the boast)) – the actual denial of service loss was not significant. However, the purpose of this paper is not to outline one example of a Web Security Breach but to outline an introduction to Web Security. The paper considers three aspects of web security from a very low level. Significant technical detail can always be included when the subject of Web Security is considered, however, Browser, Server and Connectivity security will only be viewed from an over-view perspective. A particularly useful and accessible over-view of Web Security, with a little more techno speak is Web Security, A Step-by-Step Reference Guide written by Lincoln D. Stein.
